Hospice Care Available for Seniors and the Terminally Ill

Some people are unsure of what the term "hospice" means. To put someone in hospice means to put someone under care designed for those who are terminally ill or for those who are very near passing. The reason that hospice was created was to give the elderly and the terminally ill a dignified death, with as little pain as is possible. It makes passing that much easier for both the patient and their families.

Under our Hospice program, A-1 Home Care can not only provide for your loved one a comfortable journey to the other side, but in the comfort of their very own instead of some  strange  facility. Our caregivers are trained with 2 years of experience to administer all facets of care including Senior Care, Companion Care and more!

For more information on our in home and live in services, call our office at 626 827 0250 or check us out at Sierra Madre In Home Care.

Heart Healthy Tips/ A-1 Home Care Sierra Madre

February is the month of romance, Valentines Day, and the introduction of spring. But it is also a month for Heart Health Awareness. Health is very important to us at A-1 Home Care, so we will be focusing on this today.

For heart healthy seniors, lots of attention should be paid to eating habits. Heart disease and heart attacks are results of unhealthy lifestyles. We encourage seniors to ask their caregivers to provide clean meals that follow the guidelines below.

You should eat mainly:
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Grains like whole-grain barley, buckwheat, bulgur, millet, quinoa, and sorghum
  • Fat-free or low-fat versions of milk, cheese, yogurt, and other milk products
  • Fish, skinless poultry, lean meats, dry beans, eggs, and nuts

Also, you should limit the amount of foods you eat that contain:
  • Saturated fat
  • Trans fat
  • Cholesterol
  • Sodium
  • Added sugars
A-1 Home Care provides services in Sierra Madre, Pasadena, Altadena, La Crescenta, Alhambra, Rosemead, Arcadia, El Monte and Monterey Park.

Christmas traditions around the Words: Sweden/ A-1 Home Care wishes a Happy Christmas!

The Christmas season in Sweden begins with the Saint Lucia ceremony. Before dawn on the morning of December 13th, the youngest daughter from each family puts on a white robe with a red sash. She wears a crown of evergreens with tall-lighted candles attached to it. She wakes her parents, and serves them with coffee and Lucia buns. The other children accompany her. The boys dress in long white shirts and pointed hats.

This charming custom goes back to Lucia, a Christian virgin martyred for her beliefs at Syracuse in the fourth century. While the tall candles are tradition, they have lately been replaced by electric versions, as to not cause a holiday disaster!

A-1 Home Care provides last minute holiday caregiving services for families in Sierra Madre. Let us know if you have any special or travel related arrangements required!

Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time for families- and time honored family recipes. However, it can be a time to try out new recipes as well. Though not as obvious as the turkey, Thanksgiving appetizers play a starring role in game day festivities. Here is a Food Network recipe to whet your appetite before the big meal.

Hot Spinach & Artichoke Dip by Alton Brown
Ingredients
1 cup thawed, chopped frozen spinach
11/2 cups thawed, chopped frozen artichoke hearts
6 ounces cream cheese
1/4 cup sour cream
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/3 cup grated Parmesan
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Directions

Boil spinach and artichokes in 1 cup of water until tender and drain. Discard liquid. Heat cream cheese in microwave for 1 minute or until hot and soft. Stir in rest of ingredients and serve hot.

Ask your Sierra Madre Live In Caregiver to prepare some of these with you!

After Surgery Care for Elderly in Sierra Madre

Having surgery or having to stay in a hospital is scary enough, but what if you can't care for yourself at home and don't have family who can help?  If you're scheduled for hip or knee replacement surgery or just want to have a cosmetic procedure done, hiring professional after surgery in home care is an excellent way to ensure a speedy and comfortable recovery.

Hospitals, dentists and medical centers won't let you drive yourself home after any type of surgical procedure.  Non-medical home care agencies like A-1 Home Care can pick you up, drive you to your clinical appointment and assist you home afterwards.  At home recovery from an expert Caregiver, Nurse Aide or Home Health Aide is an affordable post-surgical solution to your personal care needs.

A-1 Domestic provides Alzheimer's and Dementia in-home care services in Sierra Madre and other cities in Los Angeles County.

We sympathize with you, your Elderly loved one with Alzheimer's, and all of your affected family.  It can be a very difficult time because of the continuing loss of memory your loved one experiences.  Communication becomes harder and often repetitive as shown in this emotional video on CBS News about a woman who was a former reporter that was diagnosed with Alzheimer's when she was 55, yet began symptoms at age 40.

At A-1 Domestic, we offer caregivers, nurse aides, and companions who have experience providing 24 hour live-in care or hourly part-time care for individuals with Alzheimer's or Dementia.  We can assist with daily activities such as exercise, healthy meal preparation, personal hygiene & grooming, transportation, and stimulating activities such as board games, reading, arts & crafts, using the computer, and more.

We have been in business since 1991 with an A+ Rating from the Better Business Bureau and Shield Accreditation.  Our services span the communities of Sierra Madre, Pasadena, Arcadia, Alhambra, Altadena, La Crescenta, La Canada, San Gabriel, Rosemead, El Monte, Monterey Park, and others in Los Angeles County.

Home Care for Seniors & Elderly

A-1 Domestic Professional Services provides in-home care services for Elderly, Senior, and Terminally Ill individuals in the communities of Sierra Madre and surrounding Los Angeles County cities.

Sometimes people don't realize how stressful the life of a caregiver is, pouring their heart and soul into making sure that someone else lives well.  Too often is the caregiver under-appreciated for the amazing care they provide every day.  Here's a touching article on the New York Times about a woman who found out that her late mother's caregiver Juanita - who had been in the family for a long time - had passed away.  In the article she talks about how she never really appreciated the care that Juanita provided for her mother, who had Multiple Sclerosis.  It's a touching story that should remind us all how great the work is that caregivers provide.

A-1 Domestic offers caregivers, nurse aides, and companions for 24 hour live-in care or hourly part-time care.  Our caregivers have specialized experience with a number of Elder Care services such as Alzheimer's Care, Parkinson's Care, Arthritis Care, After Surgery Care, Diabetic Care, Cancer Care, Hospice Care, and Incontinence Care.

We are Licensed Bonded and Insured, have been in business since 1991, and have an A+ Rating from the Better Business Bureau.  If your loved one carries long-term insurance, we accept Penn Treaty, John Hancock, Bankers' Life & Casualty, Veteran Administration, MetLife Insurance, and CALPERS.

To hire an Elder caregiver today, CALL us at 626-287-0250.
